Arithmancy World How to do Arithmancy The left column teaches the basic Arithmancy, the right one teaches more complicated Numerology.

First year Arithmancy

The Meaning of Arithmancy: Alternatively 'Arithmomancy' and Arithomancy'. The term comes from the Greek 'arithmos' (number) and (divination), relating to forecasting future events by the use of numbers; esoterically it is concerned with the science of correspondences between gods, men and numbers, as taught by Pythagoras. The Caldeans also practiced this type of divination, as well as the Platonists and Pythagoreans.

Arithmancy, an elective at Hogwarts, is an ancient system of fortune-telling based on names and numbers. For over 2000 years, people have used arithmancy to analyze their strengths and weaknesses, overcome obstacles, and predict the future. Hermoine probably likes this system of divination because it isn't based on interpreting fuzzy images or giving meaning to random shapes and squiggles, but on mathematical calculations you can do with a pencil and paper..or in this case, right here on your computer.

How it Works:

The first step in analyzing a name(or word) by arithmancy is to convert it to a set of numbers. Each letter of the alphabet is assigned a numerical value between 1 and 9, according to the following chart:
 1AJS 2BKT 3CLU 4DMV 5ENW 6FOX 7GPY 8HQZ 9IR-

The letters A,J and S have the value of 1. B,K and T have the value of 2, and so forth. To analyze a name by hand, you write it down, and beneath each letter enter the corresponding numerical value. For example:

 N5 I9 C3 H8 O6 L3 A1 S1 F6 L3 A1 M4 E5 L3

Now add up the numbers. In this case, the result is 58. If the total is more than 9-which it usually is-it must be "reduced" to a single digit by adding the component numbers together, more than once, if necessary. Thus, 58 reduces to 13 (5 + 8 = 13), which reduces to 4 (1 + 3 = 4). The final result (in this example, 4) is known as the Character Number. This number indicates the general personality type of the individual.
What the Numbers Mean

1
-This is the number of the individual, the solitary unit. Ones are independent, focused, and determined. They set a goal and stick to it. They are leaders and inventors. Ones find it difficult to work with others and don't like to take orders. They can be self-centered, egotistical and domineering. They are often loners.

2-Represents interation, two-way communication, cooperation and balance. Two's are imaginative, creative and sweet natured. Peace, harmony, commitment, loyalty and fairness are characteristic. But two also introduces the idea of conflict, opposing forces and the contrasting sides of things: night and day, good and evil. Two's can be withdrawn, moody, self-conscious and indecisive.

3-Represents the idea of completeness or wholeness, as in the threesomes past-present-future and mind-body-spirit. Three indicates talent, energy, and artistic nature, humor, and unfocused, easily offended and superficial.

4-Like a table that rests solidly on four legs, four indicates stability and firmness. Fours enjoy hard work. They are practical, reliable and down to earth; they prefer logic and reason to flights of fancy. They are good at organization and getting things done. Like the cycle of the four seasons, they are also predictable. They can be stubborn, suspicious, overly practical and prone to angry outbursts. The conflicts in "two" are doubled in four.

5-This is the number of instability and imbalance, indicating change and uncertainty. Fives are drawn to many things at once but commit to none. They are adventurous, energetic and willing to take risks. They enjoy travel and meeting new people but may not stay in one place very long. Fives can be conceited, irresponsible, quick-tempered and impatient.

6-Represents harmony, friendship and family life. Sixes are loyal, reliable and loving. They adapt easily. They do well in teaching and the arts, but are often unsuccessful in business. They are sometimes prone to gossip and complacency.

7-Perceptive, understanding and bright. Seven's enjoy hard work and challenges. They are often serious, scholarly and interested in all things mysterious. Originality and imagination are more important than money and material possessions. Sevens can also be pessimistic, sarcastic adn insecure.

8-Indicates the possibility of great success in business, finance and politics. Eights are practical, ambitious, committed and hard working. They can also be jealous, greedy, domineering and power-hungry. Eight is said to be the most unpredictable of numbers and can indicate the pinnacle of success or the depths of failure; the potential to go either way is present from the beginning.

9-Represents completion and achievement to the fullest degree (as it is the complete number, three, expressed three times). Nines dedicate themselves to service, often as teachers, scientists and humanitarians. Strongly determined, they work tirelessly and are an inspiration to others. However, they can also be arrogant and conceited when things don't go their way.

Heart Number

For this lesson we will be using the Arithmancy chart again.

 1AJS 2BKT 3CLU 4DMV 5ENW 6FOX 7GPY 8HQZ 9IR-

This time we are going to find your Heart Number. This number represents the individuals inner life and can indicate desires and fears hidden from others. To find your heart number you need to find the reduced total of all the vowels in your name.

Example:
 N0 I9 C0 H0 O6 L0 A1 S0 F0 L0 A1 M0 E5 L0

Now add up the numbers. In this case, the result is 22. Thus,22 reduces to 4 (2 + 2 = 4). The final result in this example, 4)is known as the Heart Number

Social Number

For this lesson we will be using the Arithmancy chart once again.

This time we are going to find your Special Traits Number. This application of Arithmancy is not a calculation, rather just a tabulation. In finding someone's special traits they are simplified to 2 and 4 respectively. To find this, you must find the frequency of occurring numbers in a name.

Example:
 N5 I9 C3 H8 O6 L3 A1 S1 F6 L3 A1 M4 E5 L3

The Numbers occur in the following frequency:

 NumberFrequency 13 20 34 41 52 62 70 81 91

Since the number 3 is the most commonly occurring number in the name above, he has the special trait of Expression in his life. Initiative(1) is also a special trait as well, though not as strong.

Life Path Number

For this lesson we won't be using the Arithmancy chart.

This time we are going to find your Life Path Number. This number represents the path one will take from birth To find your life path number you need to take someone's birthday and simplify it down to one main number.

Example:

March 13th, 1956

1. =3(month number) + 13 + 1956
2. =3 + (1+3) + (1+9+5+6)
3. =3 + 4 + 21
4. =3 + 4 + (2+1)
5. =3 + 4 + 3
6. =10
7. =(1+0)
8. =1

This person has a life path number of 1, which means that they were born with the gift of Initiative according to the chart listed below:

Now you know basic Arithmancy

Now for harder Arithmancy- NUMEROLOGY

Numerology

The word numerology is made of the Latin word 'numerus', which means 'number', and the Greek word 'logos', which means 'word', 'thought', and 'expression'. Therefore, numerology can be defined as 'the science of numbers'.

In ancient times people used numerology to predict the future. After that it was used to understand people's personalities.

In Greece, some 2,600 years ago, Pythagoras, "the father of mathematics", wrote that numbers set a limit to the limitless, that numbers constitute the true nature of things and that all concepts can be expressed in numbers. Further, he elaborated on the qualities and relative relationships between each of the 9 numbers and, as such, became the father of modern numerology.

Numerology is basically the study of the mysterious hidden meaning that numbers can provide about a person, place or thing. To use, you must convert the letters in a name to a number. Depending on the system used, the birth date is also taken into account.

There are many systems of numerology but the two most well know are the Chaldean and the Pythagorean. Though each is a different system, with distinct differences, they both are in agreement on certain things.

Numerology Systems

PYTHAGOREAN SYSTEM

Letter converted using numbers 1 to 9 started about 600 BC sometimes call Modern Numerology. More popular because it is easier to use and gives a more materialistic meaning. It uses full names given at birth and conversion is done in sequence. Pythagoras a mathematician used it and all compound numbers reduce to single numbers. Much as the system used in Arithmancy.

Pythagorean Conversion Table

 1AJS 2BKT 3CLU 4DMV 5ENW 6FOX 7GPY 8HQZ 9IR-

The Chaldean System is different though: Below are the differences from the Pythagorean system. Chaldean System

Letters are converted using numbers 1-8 and is sometimes called Mystic Numerology. It is harder to use than the Pythagorean System. It gives an occult or mystical meaning and uses names most known and shows the behind unseen forces. This conversion is out of sequence and in unknown who originally taught it. It predates the Pythagorean System. Birthdays affect personality and health tendencies given at birth. The single and compound numbers are both important.

Numberology originally comes from Chaldea, the southernmost part of Mesopotamia. Their civilization is considered the foundation of the western cultures, meaning that we can see from the written documents (at about 3,500 years before Christ), that they used the duodecimal-sexagesimal system of counting unlike the Hebrews, and other Semites, Phoenicians, Arabs, Arians from India and Egyptians who used the decimal system.
Numbers and their Meanings

ZERO
represents the Cosmic Egg, the primordial Androgyne- the Plenum. Zero as an empty circle depicts both the nothingness of death and yet the totality of life contained within the circle. As an ellipse the two sides represent ascent and descent, evolution and involution.

Before the One (meaning the Source-not the number) there is only Void, or non-being; thought; the ultimate mystery, the incomprehensible Absolute. Begins with meanings such as, non-existence; nothingness; the unmanifest; the unlimited; the eternal. The absence of all quality or quantity.

ONE is considered to be a primordial unity. The beginning. The Creator. It is the first cause or as some cultures refer, the first mover. One is the sum of all possibilities. It is essence, the center. One is referred to as isolation. One springs forth, upsurges. It is seen as the number that gives cause to duality as multiplicity and back to final unity.

TWO represents duality. Alteration; diversity; conflict; dependence. Two is a static condition. It is rooted, seen as balance (two sides); stability; reflection. Two are the opposite poles. Represents the dual nature of the human being. It is desire, since all that is manifest in duality is in pairs of opposites. As One represents a point, two represents a length. The Binary is the first number to recede from unity, it also symbolizes sin which deviates from the first good and denotes the transitory and the corruptible. Two represents two-fold strength- that is symbolized by two of anything, usually in history, by animals in pairs.

THREE has roots that stem from the meaning of multiplicity. Creative power; growth. Three is a moving forward of energy, overcoming duality, expression, manifestation and synthesis. Three is the first number to which the meaning "all" was given. It is the Triad, being the number of the whole as it contains the beginning, a middle and an end.

The power of three is the triangle. Three interwoven circles or triangles can represent the indissoluble unity of the three persons of the trinity. Other symbols using three are: trident,fleur-de-lis, trefoil, trisula, thunderbolt and trigrams.

The astral or emotional body stays connected to the physical body for three days after death. There is scientific evidence that the brain, even when all other systems are failing takes three days to register complete shutdown.

There are three phases to the moon. Lunar animals are often depicted as 3 legged.

Three is the heavenly number, representing soul, as four represents body. Together the two equal seven (3 + 4 =7) and form the sacred hebdomad. The 3 X 4 = 12 representing the signs of the Zodiac and months of the year.

Pythagorean three means completion.

There are three wishes, genie have three wishes, three leprechauns, three prince or princesses, three witches, three weird sisters among others.

There is an ancient wisdom that says: "messages or events that come in three's are worth noticing." Whenever anything is mentioned three times it is a witness to us that these things are of utmost importance. Yet, another, "Third time's a charm".

Three symbolizes manifestation into the physical. It is the triangle-pyramid shape in the vesicas pisces.

The TV show "Charmed" deals the 'Power of Three Sister Witches', known as the Charmed Ones. Their job is to vanquish evil forces in their many forms and sometimes non-forms.

The above symbol, called a Triquetra (tri-KET a Latin word meaning 'three cornered') appears on The Book of Shadows, an ancient book of spells that assists these 'Charmed Ones' in dealing with the evil forces they are continually encountering. In some episodes so called evil and good must work together to bring balance to a situation. They cancel each other out in the end - poof - gone - disappeared!

'Power of Three' has to do with Alchemy. The Egyptian god Thoth or the Greek Hermes Trismegistus (Thrice blessed or Thrice Great) are the progenitors of the Emerald Tablets describing the mysteries of Alchemy. The alchemy of three is demonstrated by its power of multiplicity. For example, in understanding the numbers - One gave rise to Two (1+1=2) and Two gave rise to Three (2+1=3) and Three gave rise to all numbers (3+1=4, 3+2=5, 3+3=6, 3+4=7, 3+5=8, 3+6=9). This in addition to being a number of good fortune, Three is also the number of multiplicity and alchemy among other things.

Many believe the Triquetrais is an ancient symbol of the female trinity, because it is composed of three interlaced yonic Vesica Pisces (aka Piscis S Latin for "Vessel of the Fish") and is the most basic and important construction in Sacred Geometry, which is the architecture of the universe.

A Vesica is formed when the circumference of two identical circles each pass through the center of the other in effect creating a portal. 'The Triquetra' represents the 'Power of Three' or the threefold nature of existence i.e. body, mind and spirit; life, death and rebirth; past, present and future; beginning, middle and end; Sun, Moon and Earth; and the threefold co-creative process described as thought, word and deed.

There are innumerable trinities and triads throughout myth and religious traditions, such as the triple goddess; maiden, mother and crone. One example in Greek mythology is Kore, Demter and Hecate. The Christian trinity is Father, Son and Holy Ghost(Spirit). Vedic trinities include Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva with their consorts Saraswati, Lakshmi and kali to name just a few.

Numbers and their Meanings - Part II

FOUR
is seen as the first solid number.
Spatial in scheme or order in manifestation.
Static as opposed to the circular and the dynamic.
Wholeness; totality; completion; solid
Earth; order
Rational - relativity and justice. Symbol of measurement. Foundation, Alien frequency and Alien Abduction.

There are four cardinal points; fours seasons; four winds; four directions(as in North, South, East and West); four elements (fire, water, air and earth) in the western culture. In eastern cultures there are five elements.

There are four sides to a square; four arms to a cross. There are four rigvers to Paradise, that formed a cross (the Garden of Eden was said to be within the four rivers). Within Paradise were four infernal regions, seas and sacred mountains. There are four watches of the night and day, quarters of the moon. There are four quarters to the earth. Theea are four tetramorphs. The Divine Quaternity can be depicted as the quatrefoil as well as the square and the cross.

FIVE Five is the symbol of human microcosm. The number of the human being. Human forms--the pentagon when arms and legs are out stretched. The pentagon is endless--sharing the symbnolism of perfection and power of the circle. Firve is a circular number as it produces itself in its last digit when raised to its own power. The pentacle, like the circle symbolizes whole, the quincunx being the number of its center and the meeting point of heaven, earth and the four cardinal points plus the center point.

Five is also representative of the Godhead - Central Creator of the four fours plus itself equaling five. Five is the marriage of the hieros gamos as combination of feminine and the masculine. Feminine beign even, as 2, in frequency and masculine beign odd as 3 in frequency = 5.

The number five symbolizes meditiation; religion; versatility. It represents the five senses ( taste, touch, smell, sight and hearing) everywhere except in the East. In the east there are six - the extra being Mind. We find meanings to five in the five petaled flower, five pointed leaves 0 especially the Rose. The rose has much symbolism, but also the lily, vine all of which represent the microcosm.

The five pointed star depicts individuality and spiritual aspiration, and education when it points upward. The five pointed downward represents witchcraft and it is used in black magic. Noted: There is very broad difference between witchcraft and black magic.

#SIX Six represents equilibrium; harmony. It is the perfect number with the decad; 1+2+3=6. It is the most productive of all numbers.

It symbnolizes union of polarity, the hermaphrodite being represented by the two interlaced triangles, the upward - pointing as male, fire and the heavens, and the downward - pointing as female, the waters and the earth.

Six is the symbol of luck; love; health; beauty; chance. It is a winning number at the throw of the dice in the West.

There are six rays of the solar wheel and there are six interlaced triangles. There are six pointed stars or Seal of Solomon.

Six also represents perfect balance.

Numbers and their Meanings - Part III

SEVEN
is the number of the Universe. It is the three of the heavens (soul) combined with the four (body) of the earth; being the first number containing bothe the spiritual and the temporal. In looking over the list of meanings it doesn't take long to figure out why the seven has become significant in metaphysical, religiious and other spiritual doctrines...seven represents the virginity of the "Great Mother". There are "seven" ages of man, ancient wonders of the world, circles of the Universe, cosmic stages, days of the week, heavens, hells, major planets, metals of the planets, pillars of wisdom and rays of the sun.
Musical notes - sound as frequency plays a key roll in matters of the Universe. There are over 80 octaves of frequency - each governing a specific manifestation in Universe.

• Magic: There are seven knots in a cord for "spellbinding" and incantations are sevenfold. Certain orders of Brotherhood use theme of tying seven knots in their rope sash worn around their waist.

• Mithraic: The cave of Mithras has seven doors, seven altars, and a ladder with seven rungs depicting the seven grades of initiation into the mystery schools.

There are seven branches in the Tree of Life, each having seven leaves. Leaves are symbols of fertility, renewal and growth. There are seven gates of hell, seven demons of Tiamat and seven winds to destroy her--interesting to note that in many belief systems, it is said that the astral plane has seven levels to it--one sound on one of thoses levels is "wind".

Seven is a mystic number traditionally associated with Venus and more recently with Neptune. It is the number of feelings and of instinct - of the Group Mind, of Love, whether that strange, indescribable but pervasive feeling of love is towards another person, a pet, oneself or one's God. "Love" embodies tremendous sexual energy, the emotions of which may be directed in various ways.

EIGHT Spirtitually eight is the goal of the initiate, having gone through the seven stages. Eight is the number of Paradise regained.

Eight is solidarity as the first cube and it denotes perfection by virtue of it's six surfaces. There are eight winds and intermediate directions of space. Eight represents the pairs of opposites. The octagon is the beginning of the transformation of the square into a circle and vice versa.

NINE Nine is composed of the all-powerful 3X3.

It is the Triple Triad - Completion; fulfillment; attainment; beginning aned the end; the whole number; a celestial and angelic number - the Earthly Paradise.

It is the number of the circumference, its division into 90 degrees and into 360 for the entire circumference.

Nine is symbolized by the two triangles which are a symbol of male, fire, mountain and female, water, cave principles.

Six also represents perfect balance

Numbers and their Meanings - Part IV

TEN
Is the number of the cosmos- the paradigm of creation. The decad contains all numbers and therefore all things and possibilities. It is the radix or turning point of all counting.

Ten is all -inclusive representing law; order and dominion. The tetraktys 1+2+3+4=10 symbolizes divinity and one represents a point; two, length, three, a plane or surface (as a triange); four, solidity and space.

It is seen as the perfect- the return to unity. When based on the digits of the two hands, it is completness and the foundation of all counting. Its highest ranges of completeness, 100 and 1000 are the basis of all Hindu cosmology, and in China the Ten Thousand Things, ie: the uncountable, symbolize the whole of manifestation.

Ten is also the number of completion of journeys and returns to origins: Odysseus wandered for nine years and returned on the tenth. Troy was besieged for nine years and fell on the tenth. Ten is the sum of the number nine of the circufeerence with the one of the center--being perfection. We see ten also being symolized in rituals like the ritual of the Maypole- the one of the axis with the circle danced around.

ELEVEN11:11 is a digital code for awakening.

In systems such as Astrology and basic Numerology, eleven is considered to be a Master number.

Eleven can also represent sin; transgression and peril. Ten being the perfect number, eleven represents the exceeding of both. It is interesting to note that eleven when broken down (1+1=2) comprises the Two of duality.

TWELVE12:12 references the digital code for the illusion of time- the Great Pyramid.

Reality is created by 12 a source. (Triggered by a tone - the source divides into 12 pyramids which spiral around the source creating a multi-dimensional grid or matrix. This is the source of energy which creates everything our soul experiences in many levels of grid realtities. This all occurs simultaneously - though 12 is a measure of time - the calendar months, clocks, astrology, etc.

The Duocad is a complete cycle; cosmic order. The 3X4 is both the spiritual and temporal order- our year. Twelve hours in a day and night. Twelve days of Yuletide and Christmas; these celebrations are also found in Vedic, Chinese, Pagan and European symbolism. The days are said to forecast the meteorological pattern of the twelve months of the coming year.

THIRTEEN Christianity there are thirteen Tenebrae or Lenten-hearse, candles which are extinguished one by one symbolizing the darkness on earth at Christ's death. Thirteen is considered to be unlucky and its origin is found in the idea being Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus. He was considered to be disciple number 13

TWENTY As the sume of the fingers and toes twenty carries the significance of the whole man and reckoning by the score.

FORTY Seems to have many meanings associated with it; especially religious.

It is the number of probation; trial; initiation; death.
As an elevation of four it is wholeness and totality.
The importance of the "forty days" probably comes from the Babylonian forty days, disappearance of the Pleaides, a period of rains, storms, floods and dangers. The return of the Pleaides was a time of rejoicing and a bundle of forty reeds was burned for the forty days of evil power.

The Roman "quarantine" kept ships isolated for forty days in the harbor.
Temples in Persia, Baalbec, Tartary, those of the Druids and the Temple of Ezekeil, had forty pillars.
Bible: Jesus spent forty days in the desert being tempted by the devil.
There are forty days to Lent, from which were from those forty days in the wilderness.
There are forty days of the resurrection, from Easter to Ascension.
There are forty days to "priviledged sanctuary, and forty days to St. Swithin's weather.
In the Old Testament Moses spent forty days on Mt Sinai; Moses' spies spent forty days in Canaan and Caleb, one of them, was forty years old.
For forty days, Elijah was in hiding.
For fory years the Jews wandered in the wilderness.
In the flood it rained for forty days and Noah's raven was sent out forty days after mountain tops appeared.
Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah and Esau was also forty when he took a wife.
It took forty days to embalm Jacob.
Israel spent forty years in the wilderness.
The standard legal beating consisted of forty blows
David reigned for forty years as did Solomon.

FIFTY After the completionof the 7X7 cycle of years the fiftieth becomes the Great Year, Jubilee, a return to the beginning and the primordial state.

Numbers and their Meanings - Part V

II:II
seems to be the main code to unlock the subconscious mind/our memories and connections to who we are as spirit having a physicla experience - not physical beings having a spiritual experience.

As you quest for answers you discover that reality is a programmed illusion of thought consciousness in which our souls have come to experience.

Once you move into higher frequencies you begin to create more quickly or become more aware of synchronicities, meaningful coincidences that your soul creates for you to remembers and trigger your awareness.

Upon seeing your digital encoded numbers, you may feel a sense of urgency or related emotions. The numbers usually signal changes in the patterns of your life. They may confirm something that you are experiencing whenever the numbers appear to you. You may dream about the numbers, linked with things that you do not as yet understand.

By sheer coincidence, the deadly terrorist train bombings in Madrid, Spain last March 11th, occured exactly 911 days after Muslim extremists attacked New York City and Washington on Sept. 11. Number 11 has indeed been hounding humanity since the infamous 911 attack nearly three years ago.

Consider this: The date of the attack was Sept. 11 or 9 + 1 + 1 = 11, and to think that September 11 has 9 letters and 2 numbers: 9 + 2 = 11 and the number 911 is the telephone number for emergencies in the US.

Likewise, Sept. 11th is the 254th day of the year and to add the numbers 2,4 and 5 together, the total sume is 11. After Sept. 11th there are 111 days left until the end of the year.

Terrorists used an unconventional method in attacking New York and Washington by hijacking commercial jetliners and slamming them on Apple City's twin towers which look like No. 11. There's more to it on the bizarre No. 11. The terrorists hijacked the first plane with flight AA11 and the targets were the double 11, twin towers. Four of the hijackers on board flight AA11 have the initials A.A. which when translated to number is 11.

The fifth AA11 hijacker was the pilot named Mohamed Atta, whose name has 11 letters. The plane was carrying 92 passengers. When added together, 9 + 2 = 11. The ill-fated plane had 11 crew members, 2 pilots and 9 flight attendants.

New York was the 11th state to be added to the Union and the Trade Center has 11 letters. The first tower collapsed at 10:28. When added together, 1 + 0 + 2 + 8 =11. The first firetruck to arrive on scene was No 11. The fire truck lost 11 firemen combating the blaze and the World Trade Center collapsed to a height of 11 stories.

Topping it all, New York officials announced that the death toll was 2,801, when added together 2 + 8 + 0 + 1 =11. The plane that hit the Pentagon had 65 people on board. Again 6 + 5 =11. The prime suspect in the attacks is Osama Bin Laden who birthplace is Saudi Arabia, again 11 letters. The first man who orchestrated the attack in 1993 was Ramzi Yousef, again 11 letters.

Number 11 is indeed significant. Consider these significant historical events: World War I ended on the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month. The first man to land on the moon was aboard Apollo 11.

Ancient Superstitious beliefs say Number 11 has been associated with mystery and power for thousands of year. It has remained a puzzle to mankind.
